Healthy Practices
St. Edmund's College (SEC) has, over the years, worked into its normal routine several Healthy Practices that have been instrumental in developing a strong bondage of love and respect between the students and teachers, and a deep loyalty and love among students for their alma mater. A college set up by the Christian Brothers Organization with European Model of Ethical and Educational norms can easily distinguish itself, as SEC can, from a college set up with commercial interest in mind. Its sprawling campus, five playfields marked for various games, other amenities do signal a concern not only for educating the students, but also for their wholesome development as healthy and responsible human beings.
SEC's extra-curricular schedule of about 65 competitions all the year round, its celebration of College Month in which students take leading role, its cell for student counseling and the introduction (in 2003) of Mentoring are instances of the kind of concern the college has for the all-round development of the students. The last, in which every teacher is made the "mentor" of about 15 Honours students and is asked to give them personal care and guidance, has become highly popular and has been largely responsible for making all Edmundians members of a closely knit family.
Another noteworthy feature of SEC has been the regular enrolment of students from far outside the boundaries of Meghalaya - beginning from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and stretching upto Sikkim, Bhutan and beyond. It also caters to the rural tribal population as well as the physically challenged ones. The construction of a ramp which spirals from ground floor to the top floor has helped facilitate the handicapped students reach their classroom easily.
The college has a strong Alumni Association that includes people from various strata of the Society. It is quite reflective of the Academic excellence of the Institution as well as the thrust it gives to the total development of its alumnus. The members of the Alumni also vent their trust and confidence in it. Over the years St. Edmund's has evolved a proud list of Alumni, which reads like a veritable "Who's Who" of the region, not excluding the country at large. Beginning with the Ex-CEC (Mr. J. Lyngdoh), several Chief Ministers and Ministers, hundreds of high officials in the Army, Police Force and Administration of the state and the country and a huge professional contingent deployed all over the country and the world, there are former students of this college, all of whom rally round through the Alumni Association, whenever occasion so demanded. The pluralistic character of the students' population, all involved in the serious business of learning, gives an idea how highly St. Edmund's is perceived by those who send their wards here.
Another unique feature of SEC is that for many years now there has been no "Students' Strike" or "Teachers' Strike." Whenever there is a problem, a crisis of contrasting views, the students sit with the authorities to discuss the matter and more often than not arrive at an amicable solution. Edmundians believe that there is no crisis that cannot be talked through. Significantly, there has been hardly a trace of political interference and the students are largely free from any kind of trade union politics.
The students of almost all Departments are encouraged to think and act creatively by publishing Newsletters of their respective Departments. In such ventures the students take the initiative with an occasional advice or two by their teachers. The idea, obviously, is to make the students more responsible and the response generally has been extremely satisfactory.
The college has also built up a deep interest and commitment in socially-significant extra-curricular activities. The students are involved in various programmes of social relevance through its NSS and NCC outfits, those like taking care of the otherwise-abled children, participating in blood-donation camps, spreading ecological & AIDS awareness, adopting a village for its all-round development, planting of trees, participating in camping for Literacy and against Drug Abuse, etc.
